This shift has been marked by increased scholarship on effective museum education practices—a turn that has led to the professionalization of the field. Across the country, museums have responded to the increased rigor of learning and teaching in museums with more career opportunities for trained museum educators including school, family, and public program directors, as well as interpretive materials and digital media developers, access program coordinators, teaching artists, and visitor studies evaluators.

CCNY’s MA in Art History: Concentration in Art Museum Education is designed to meet the needs of professionals and students interested in creating and understanding art museum education today. Emphasizing object-based learning and participatory approaches to learning in museum contexts, this program will provide students with a critical exploration of museum education, grounded in the belief that museums are important spaces for community engagement, civic participation, and social change.

This new interdisciplinary program—the first at a public university in New York City––brings together scholarship and practice from art history, art education, visitor studies, and learning theory to prepare students to be effective producers and evaluators of learning and teaching in museum settings. Drawing on connections with local museums, all students will complete a hands-on apprenticeship in education in a NYC museum. This program will complement CCNY’s vibrant Concentration in Art Museum Studies, further expanding the options for our students to pursue in-depth study in this emerging field.

Antrhopology MA in Museum Anthropology Anthropologie MA Museum Anthropology: History and Theory; Exhibiting Cultures: Politics and Practices of Museum Exhibitions non The M.A. in Museum Anthropology is a professional degree for those already employed in or interested in moving into the museum field. Students learn the practical skills entailed in working in museums and develop the strong theoretical perspective essential to those who are using material culture to express ideas through visual display. The program prepares students to interpret ethnographic and archaeological collections to the general public, work in registration or collections management, and become scientific, educational or research staff for a range of museums, from small local museums with historical or scientific orientations that require generalists, to larger institutions where staff hold more specialized museums.

In the Columbia/AMNH program, "Museum Anthropology" refers to the critical study of museums from an anthropological perspective, including their history and changing role in contemporary society. Museums, while always significant, have become perhaps the major institution of national legitimization, especially for emerging or non-Western states. The project of museum anthropology also includes a perspective on the meaning of placing people or objects on display and whose authority is interposed between these objects and viewers.

Students in the MA Program explore new approaches to museum practice in existing museums, and in new museums in post-colonial settings. The study of museums connects to issues of heritage and repatriation and adds additional depth and complexity to the significance of objects and their histories. Students have a unique opportunity to engage with these issues in an intellectually stimulating anthropology program and in dialogue with museum professionals who have deep experience exploring these questions in the creation of innovative public exhibits. The program also requires students to devise and install a professional public museum exhibition each year.

148 1.a Amérique du Nord Etats-Unis Kent (Ohio) Kent State University College of Communication and Information Library and Information Sciences - specilization Museum Studies Sciences de l'information et de la communication MA Foundations of Museum Studies; Museum Collections; Museum Communication; Museum Users; The Museum System; Developing Memorable Museum Tours; Museum Collection Information Management; Museum Object Preparation Methods; Museums and the Law; Writing and Developing an Exhibit Script non Museums, like libraries, are in the information business. The museum studies courses at Kent State employ a holistic approach to the study of museums as institutions, like libraries, that generate and perpetuate knowledge. Students will gain an understanding of museums in context as dynamic, interactive information systems composed of people, objects, and activities.

What distinguishes the Kent State SLIS approach is that the museum is at the center of study, not content. Most museum studies programs take the subject content (e.g., history, natural history, or art) as the focus for student training. The courses offered by SLIS make the study of museums their core starting point, allowing content to filter in from previous degree work, other electives or research. Because the SLIS courses are structured within a library and information science framework, students are able to cut across the spectrum of traditional academic disciplines, which strengthens the skills of future museum professional by giving them a broader perspective, a larger knowledge base, and more flexibility.

The museum studies specialization within SLIS prepares M.L.I.S. graduates with the knowledge and skills required to not only work in traditional LIS careers as librarians and registrars, but also serve as trained information professionals in many additional capacities in museums. The courses offered by SLIS will prepare graduates to work in any type of museum.
